Looking back at all my artworks posted on this blog, I think I should be adding more. Before I know it, a quarter of 2010 has passed me by. Its time to get productive and creative. Remember the Four Sisters sketch? Well, I recreated it with acrylic on canvas. That was done last year in december for the SAS annual exhibition.

Ren the Rabbit

Here's Ren. Not named after the Korean singer Rain. Its just short for Oren, the color of the rabbit. I made it recently when Georgette invited me to sponsor an item to auction off for Project Snip Snip as her birthday project. The money goes to Sarawak Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA). She wants to raise $1500 for neutering 30 cats or dogs. How bout doing some charity and at the same time get a special handmade gift for yourself?

Obscure Sound is an indie music blog by Mike Mineo. This site provides information on relatively unknown bands regardless if they are signed or unsigned. I get exposure to quite a lot of good and interesting music which otherwise I may never hear of. The reviews are well written and gives a good idea about the type of music to expect from each band. I'm trying to get hold of the music recommended, especially the ones from the page, 10 best albums of 2008.

Ode to Kirihito

I finally finish reading this manga after buying it at Kinokuniya a few years back. Its quite an amazing book. First of all, its the thickest manga I have in my collection, which is why it took me so long to read it. Besides that, its story is also one of the darkest and most complicated. The artist is Dr Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astroboy, Kimba the White Lion, Phoenix and Black Jack. Ode to Kirihito is a story about a promising young doctor, Kirihito Osanai. He is assigned to visit a remote Japanese mountain village to investigate the source of the latest medical mystery called the Monmow Disease. There seems to be no cure for it. Its a life-threatening condition that transforms a person into a dog-like beast. Ode to Kirihito demolishes naive notions about human nature and health by showing us the dark side. It is both entertaining and shocking to read.

Swatch CreArt collections sound like my blog name with a missing 'e'. The designs are pretty interesting. Its a fun collaboration between Swatch and 4 international artists; Billy The Artist; Matthew Langille; Ted Scapa and Grems. French Artist Billy with his “Art Returns to Reality” concept turns art into reality. It is s like a kaleidoscope reflecting the diversity and pleasant elements of human spirit. Matthew Langille an artist in New York who has a distinctive style with witty elements. Ted Scapa , a famous artist from Holland has devoted a lifetime to paint and creative ideas. He has been writing, making and editing books about arts for 35 years. Grems is a French Street painter, rapper, hip hop artist and designer. His works has elevated the street painting to another level. Wearing these watches feel like wearing graffiti around your wrist. Its street Art meets fashion.

American Born Chinese

I've just finished reading American Born Chinese. Its a graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang and colored by cartoonist Lark Pien. Its interesting how the book begin with 3 different tales which eventually merges into a complete story. The 1st is the legendary folk tale of The Monkey King.
The 2nd is about Jin Wang a Chinese American boy who tries hard to be a regular American boy especially after he had a crush on his classmate, an all-American girl, Amelia Harris. The 3rd tale is about Danny, anAmerican boy, whose Chinese cousin Chin-Kee comes and visits every year. Chin-Kee is a Chinese stereotype who would embarrass Danny every time he visits. As these 3 tales come together, there is an unexpected twist. The story is about the characters struggle against discrimination, their quest for self-identity, self-acceptance and truth.

Fun Home

I borrowed this book from the library and enjoyed it. Written by Alison Bechdel, Fun Home (subtitled A Family Tragicomic) is a graphic memoir that chronicles the author's childhood, focusing on her complex relationship with her father. Being one of the best books of 2006, it was also nominated for several awards. Fun Home also generated controversy with objection to its contents. Fun Home derives from her family's profession of running a funeral home.

The book revolves around her relationship with her father. He was an obsessive redecorater, consumed with the 18-year historical restoration of their house. With him being more interested in his projects than his family member's feelings or interests, they learned early to leave him alone. From young, Her tastes always opposed his. However, they had something significant in common. Bechdel has created art from her lesbianism, while her father kept his homosexuality hidden behind the facades he carefully created. Both she and her father have a remoteness to their presence. Bechdel was a tomboy, rejecting anything feminine in an attempt to balance her father’s lack of masculinity. But they both have a love of literature, of using references to books and myths to explain themselves.

Bechdel’s style is straightforward. Her detailed drawings strive to present what she remembers accurately and with detail. Her characters are solid and realistic. This book is an insightful, powerful exploration of life, death, and family relations.

The Art of Djalong Liban: Immortalizing the Kenyah 'Mamat' Ritual

These 10 Kenyah paintings are currently exhibited in the Sarawak Museum. The paintings were kept by Professor Jerome Rousseau of McGill University in Canada for about 30 years before they were returned to the Sarawak Museum on 28 Sept 2006. The paintings, depicting scenes of the Kenyah mamat (thanksgiving) ceremony, were done in Kuching in the early 1960s by one Djalong Liban of Long Nawan, Apo Kayan Kalimantan. The paintings were kept by Rousseau for former Sarawak Museum curator, the late Tom Harrison. The mamat ceremony, an important Kenyah ritual, depicted in the paintings, is no longer practised or observed although it is one of the most impressive traditional arat forms in Sarawak. The art of the Orang Ulu is influencial in Sarawak. They can be seen on wall paintings and carvings on longhouse doors, sheaths of ceremonial swords (parang ilang) and other implements, shields and musical instruments, dresses and headgears, baby carriers and chairs, longboats, rice barns, face masks, objects and figures of deities and burial huts.

Heritage Talk

The ‘Heritage talk’ organised by STF, in collaboration with the Sarawak Heritage Society was held at the State Tourism Complex in Kuching on 21 April 09. Minister of Tourism, Datuk Michael Manyin wanted to push for Kuching to be gazetted as a heritage city like Penang and Malacca. To do that, proper documentation had to be done, for example, on its history, people, and virtue among others. Two prominent speakers Laurence Loh from Penang and Lye Pi Chin from Malacca both gave impressive talks based on their knowledge and experiences. Loh was the international assessor in Macau’s successful bid for listing as a World Heritage Site. He also serves as a member of the Penang State Heritage Committee and was part of the Penang team responsible for the Unesco Submission Dossier for George Town’s listing as a World Heritage Site. Lye is an award-winning author, senior reporter and editor for Sin Chew Daily newspaper. She has contributed numerous articles on heritage-related issues and stories of Malacca to magazines and other publications. It was really interesting expecially the Q and A session after the talk. Sketch on plastic

If you buy those writable cds in bundles you will get these plastics on both ends which protects the cds from scratches. I have a lot of them and decide to recycle by sketching on them. Here are some of the ones I did with permanent markers. I only have 3 color options, black, blue and red. So far, I've given some of these as gifts to friends.

Here's an article I read from The Malaysian Insider, regarding Art and the Marketplace:

For 20 years or more, if you were a Malaysian artist, not in the popular line-up, yet one of those lucky ones with your artwork in the National Art Gallery’s (NAG) collection, you’ll probably have a quibble with NAG because you can’t find any of your works on display in the premier art institution. Why?

There could be many reasons for this distressing situation. One was that there was simply no deliberate policy, in the past, to display a sample of ever artist, past and present, old and young, of the 3,800 artworks in their collection, for the public to get an overview and judge for themselves what sort of artistic talents we have in the country.

But thanks to the current Director General of NAG, Mohamad Najib Ahmad Dewa, many things have changed. The 54-year-old, who has a PhD in textiles, was the former Dean of the University Science Malaysia’s Centre for Art Studies. He took over the helm of NAG in 2007.

During my recent KL trip, I bought this book at Kinokuniya. The cover immediately caught my attention. I like Jessica Abel's drawing style. The story seems quite interesting as well.

Yulia Brodskaya is simply brilliant with her papergraphics. Born in Russia, she started out as a fine artist producing contemporary office decoration artwork for Moscow based companies. In 2004 she moved to London and had parallel careers as an illustrator and a freelance graphic designer. She won 1st prize in the Russian Conceptual Packaging Design Competition and elected a Member of the International Society of Typographic Designers in 2006. She is constantly experimenting and evolving, and her greatest passion is to explore the ways of combining illustration and typography.

We bought this book at Red Bookshop, State library today. There's a discount of 80% which is such a good deal for a lovely hardcover book of our favourite band. This book take us through more than 30 years of the band's career together. There are more than 150 hours of interviews, where the four men talks about music, relationships and the evolution of the band. There are endless beautiful photos as you flip through. This is their life stories, starting from childhood and continues on through the Vertigo tour. The most interesting photos I found would be the photos below. Can you tell who's who?

Kuching - Sarikei - Matu

Here are some old sketches we did during our trip to Matu in 2002. The journey was long and tiring. The only way to get there was by boat. It was good to be away from the city to experience a simple lifestyle in a small town. Everyone wakes up very early when the cock crows and sleep around 9pm everyday. It takes time to get used to that. We stayed at Hee's relative's house and really enjoyed the peaceful and refreshing esperience.

Urban Sketchers is a group blog where artists from around the world showcases their sketches of people and places of the cities of at least four different continents: from London to Moscow, from Barcelona, to New York, from San Francisco, to Lisbon, São Paulo and Tokyo. Seattle illustrator and journalist Gabi Campanario started this blog because he wanted to gather the best talent in one spot. Yoshihiro Tatsumi is considered the grandfather of Graphic Novel in Japan for starting the gekiga style of alternative comics in 1957. His works only enjoy worldwide popularity when Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly started to publish them in annual anthologies. His comics deal with the human mind and condition, especially in the working class society. The stories are simultaneously haunting, disturbing, and darkly humorous. Tatsumi focus on the troubled emotion and sexual lifes of the individuals trapped in the overwhelming and crowded society of his time. He is absolutely fearless in his willingness to examine what it means to be human.
Designed and edited by Adrian Tomine, The Push Man and Other Stories is the debut volume in a the series of anthologies. Abandon the Old in Tokyo is the second of the series that continues to delve into the urban underbelly of 1960s Tokyo, exposing Tatsumi’s maturation as a story writer. I bought these two books at Kinokuniya a few years ago and look forward to acquiring the latest addition, Good-Bye. It's shortly after the war in the 70s that Tatsumi created these desperate stories about the aftershocks and desperation experienced by the men and women.

Here's another lovely book I bought at the Times Book Fair, also selling at RM12.00. A delightful collection of poems about cats with unusual names by T.S. Elliot and Edward Gorey's simple black-and-white drawings of cats added a charming and mischievous touch to complete it. This book also forms the basis for the longest-running Broadway musical Cats.

Tim Burton's: The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy

I found this book yesterday at the Times Book Fair. I've read it here before and love it so much. I bought it for only RM12.00 which is really a good deal. Tim Burton is a genious and I enjoyed most of his movies. He create characters that are helpless and lovable, however strange and unusual they may be. Let me introduce to you, a new and happening eating guide for Kuching called Eat OK (short for eatingoutkuching). Let the 3 food experts tell you about the best places to eat since with so many choices in town, it can be a tough job hunting for a good place to satisfy your appetite. I only know about Eat OK when Francis contact me to design the logo for them. And I'm glad they pick this logo from the few that I designed because I'm quite pleased with it myself. The concept is pretty obvious with the OK hand sign and the eating hand gesture.

I had a good time at the beach last weekend. Its been a long time since we go for holiday. The weather was great. Not too hot and no rain. Managed to go home and bring Jaron along the next morning. Its his first time at the beach and he really enjoyed the view. My 2 artworks are still there at the lobby and its been there for some time already. Oh well, perhaps I should try something different next time.

Gorey Fever

I bought Ascending Peculiarity : Edward Gorey a few years ago and only read a a few pages. Recently I picked it up again and it got me craving to read all his books. The 21 interviews from Ascending Peculiarity were conducted between 1973 and 1999 by a variety of people. They provide autobiographical perspectives on writer and illustrator Edward Gorey (1925-2000). These conversations show how unfailingly charming, gracious, and fascinating this artistic genius was. Gorey wrote more than 100 books but most of them were published obscurely and are difficult to find. There are 4 omnibus editions which compiles most of these short books together and they are Amphigorey (1972), Amphigorey Too (1975), Amphigorey Also (1983) and Amphigorey Again (2006). These are the 4 books that I hope to get my hands on soon. French Comics

When you mention comics in Malaysia, one would most likely think of Japanese manga and marvel comics. You would miss out on some really good comics if you never read French comics. So far, I have only read "Persepolis" and "Embroideries" by Marjane Satrapi and Epileptic by David B. Their comics are published by L'Association was one of the most important publishers to come out of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. With some of their comics translated in English, they made their way into the International market.

Persepolis the movie

I read Persepolis graphic novel about 2 years ago and really love it. Its an autobiographical of Marjane Satrapi. It is a heartbreaking true story of a childhood coinciding with regime change and war in Iran. The film begins in an airport where MarJan remembers her life as a 10 year old girl in 1979. The general uprising against the Shah of Iran begins and her family hopes for a more just society. Unfortunately, they are disappointed when Islamic Fundamentalists win the elections and force their society into a repressive state. The family find some comfort in attending secret parties which is outlawed. As she grows up, Marji refuses to stay out of trouble by comforming to the ways of the law and religion. Fearing her arrest for her outspokenness, Marji's parents send her to a school in Vienna, Austria. Unfortunately, Marji feels isolated and ashamed of being Iranian. When her passionate love affair ended traumatically with her bf cheating on her, Marji falls into a deep depression that drives her into homelessness. She nearly died of bronchitis but was rescued off the streets. Eventually, Marji returns to Iran at the end of the war with hope of better life. However, once again petty religious absurdities makes it intolerable for her. As her marriage to a local boy falls apart, the family decides that Marji must leave the country again and this time permanently.

This is a nice Irish musical film with a down to earth storyline. Its about a couple of struggling musicians. The actors are real life musicians by the way, and I really like their music & dowmloaded the soundtrack as well. This is quite a successful Indie-movie (I'm a fan of Indie musics and Indie movies) and received extremely enthusiastic reviews and awards such as the 2007 Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film. Hansard and Irglová's song "Falling Slowly" received a 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the soundtrack as a whole also received a Grammy nomination.

Die or revive?

Should I let this blog die or revive it? It look so dead to me. haha. What a shame. I still have lots of ideas & stuffs to blog but sitting down & actually putting them on the blog is what I am so lazy to do. I think I really need to motivate myself & stop giving excuses. hmmph...now where do I start? Well, mayb update you guys on what I've been doing lately. I have too much to do at work. One exhibition after another. But Hari Raya coming up soon. Hurray! Need a break. Also been bz with my apartment. Got the grill, lighting & fan done. Already bought the DIY curtains but not yet put up. Err...next gotta shop for cushion cover, bed and cupboard. Almost done. It really is hard work furnishing an apartment no matter how small it is. Spent too much time shopping & comparing prices. Also need to clean up the place...so dirty. :(

It's an emotional piece about a point in life when you think you are supposed to be happy because you have reached your goal and acquired what you think you really wanted but somehow you are still unhappy and unsatisfied. Rainforest World Craft Bazaar

In conjunction with the Rainforest World Music Festival, Sarawak Craft Council in collaboration with Sarawak Tourism Board organised Rainforest World Craft Bazaar which showcase unique and artistic crafts from international and local artisans. It was held at Sarawak Cultural Village from July 9 to 15. There are international participants from Japan, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia and Argentina. The one that caught my attention was Asano Chisato, a talented young Japanese artist with her interesting looking toys and puppets. A graduate of Kyoto-Saga University of Arts, Asano works on design and print media, producing material for cartoon strips, among other things. Not satisfied with just two-dimensional characters, she try them in three dimensions. She also does puppet shows at art galleries, shrines and community festivals. There's a section on Art which you can check out if you want to know how to draw or paint or anything related. They also have How-to videos which is professionally done and not as odd and wacky as the ones on videojug.

Folk Art Exhibition

The Folk Art Exhibition as mentioned here, showcase artworks by both local & foreign artists. I feel that there were too few artworks and some are out of topic. I like the sculptures by Daf and portraits by Tan Wei Kheng. The exhibition was held at the Orang Ulu House of Sarawak Culture Village.

Kuching has just lost some of its greatest charm. These priceless stretch of architectural relics along the waterfront are sacrificed for commercial redevelopment. The tea-shop atop an old godown that offered the experience of having tea as His Highness the Rajah once did will also disappear. With disappointing tourism industry in this city, it seems that preserving the heritage of Kuching will not benefit as much as tearing down the old in order to make way for developments that will yield better dividends from prime city-centre locations. With such mentality, the historical roots of Kuching are rendered insignificant. This city will never be the same again after the relocation.

VideoJug is a "How to" video website which provides a guide for many differing subjects. Videos are both professionally made videos and uploaded by amateurs. In 2007 the company claimed to be making up to 800 videos per week. Many of these videos are somehow unintentionally amusing. These videos come complete with captions and a text version of the instructions to print out. With its slogan, "Life explained. On film", you can't get better explainations than this. Here's one of their video which makes me laugh. :)

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (Gake no ue no Ponyo) is an animated film by Studio Ghibli, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The story is about a goldfish princess named Ponyo who desperately wants to be a human. Ponyo rides a jellyfish and ran away from home. She arrives at a small town facing the sea and meets Sosuke (visually modeled after Miyazaki's grandson), a boy who lives in a house on a cliff. Ponyo puts her head into a jam jar, but can't get out of it. Sosuke happens to find it and helps her. They both fall in love. However, Ponyo is brought back to the sea by her father Fujimoto. He once quit being a human. Ponyo asks her youngerl sisters to help steal her father's magic to enter the human world. The film will open in Japan on July 19, 2008. I'm not sure why they use goldfish instead of other type of fish because their natural habitats are lakes and ponds, not the sea.

Folk Art Forum

Folk Art Forum, in conjunction with the Rainforest World Music Festival 2008 is about the celebration of the people and the rich culture of the world. Organised by Galleria and in collaboration with Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), the Folk Art Forum will begin from July 10 to 13 at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV). The itinerary for the four-day event includes Art Talk and Workshop and Art Exhibition. The Art Exhibition with the theme "Our People Our Culture" will showcase the rich and colourful culture and heritage of the local community through the various Sarawak's artists . The exhibition will be held at the Orang Ulu House at SCV from 10am to 5pm during the four days. Paintings also include works of international artists. The Art Talk and Forum will be held on July 10 at Dewan Lagenda and will be conducted by renowned local artist, Sylvester Jussem and and foreign artists, Stephen Bennet(USA-based artist) and Daf(Irish sculptor). Another well-known local artist Tan Wei Kheng will conduct the workshop. Those keen to attend the art talk and forum are to fill in the form available at Rainforest World Music Festival website and seats are limited.

The Sarawak State Library is exhibiting Contemporary Picturebook Illustrations from Germany and Malaysia at the Newspaper Reading Room from 11am-7pm daily starting from 4-18 June 2008. The library is closed on Sunday & Public Holiday. The exhibition will showcase 13 works from various local & German illustrators and book designers. The Kite Runner

I've just watched this movie recently and really like the story. This film is directed by Marc Forster and based on the novel of the same name by Khaled Hosseini. You are required to do a lot of reading when you watch this movie because much of the film's dialogue is in Dari Persian(unless you undertand this language). Though most of the film is set in Afghanistan, it was actually shot in Kashgar, China, due to the dangers of filming in Afghanistan at the time. The two main characters are Amir, a rich Afghan boy, and Hassan, the servant's son. They spend their childhood in a peaceful Kabul, kite fighting and roaming the streets. However, Amir became tormented by guilt for abandoning Hassan when he was assaulted and raped for the sake of staying loyal to Amir. To force Hassan to leave, Amir framed him as a thief. He succeeded but his shame remained with him till adulthood. Amir and his father left for California during the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion. After Hassan died, the grown up Amir was able to make atonement by going back to Kabul to rescue Hassan's son from the Taliban.

After watching the Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie Amélie, I discovered Guillaume Yann Tiersen, the composer of the movie soundtrack. He use a large variety of instruments with a touch of either European classical music or french folk music, using primarily the piano, accordion or violin together with instruments like the melodica, xylophone, toy piano, ondes martenot, harpsichord and typewriter. Born in Brittany, France, in 1970, he received classical training at several musical academies. He rose to domestic fame with the release of his third album, Le Phare, and became known internationally with the release of his score for d'Amélie Poulain soundtrack in 2001. I discovered Last.fm recently, although it is not that new. It is an online radio and music community website, founded in 2002. What you need to do is key in the name of your favourite artist and click play. Then, it will start to play songs by artists similar to the user's favourites. This is a great way to get to know new artist that you may like. You can create custom radio stations and playlists from any of the audio tracks in Last.fm's music library, and are able to listen to some individual tracks on demand or download tracks if authorised.

According to Wikipedia, "Amigurumi" is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. Amigurumi are typically cute animals but can include inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features. Amigurumi can be either knitted or crocheted. Pelaka - Poster/Mural Colour

Today, I received this gift box of Pelaka colours together with several colour charts from Perniagaan Hai Kuang Sdn Bhd. There are 12 bottles (80gm) of different colours (my choice) in the box. In exchange, they ordered some painted stones from me. I'm not new to this medium as I've used Pelaka for my paintings and crafts. Its a very versatile and durable medium. There are a lot of colour choices and the quality is improving. I can't wait to try out these colours.

We had a Choicee gathering on 12 October 07, Friday night at the Bing! cafe, Kuching. Its been a while since I met them altogether. We also celebrated Cuthbert and Janice's birthday. I brought a cake and pass to the staff at the counter. They were kind enough to bring it out at the right moment and all the staffs sang the birthday song out loud. I'm pleased with their service and glad that they didn't mind that the cake was bought somewhere else. Hope next year, more of the gang will join us.

First European Artist in Bali

When we visited Bali in 2005, we bought this book by W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp entitled "First European Artist in Bali":W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp is the first foreign artist to visit Bali. Born in Amsterdam in 1876, Nieuwenkamp’s nickname was the "Wanderer". A multi-faceted autodidact, the artist was more a graphic artist than a painter. His artworks are full of details, lines and patterns. You can view his artworks on his official website and also here. One of his artworks, entitled: Washing day - Chinatown, Batavia 1896 (below) can be found in this book:
We found this old photo of Batavia (Jakarta) later and managed to locate the exact spot where he painted the artwork (above). We would not have known the beautiful colors of this place if not for this painting. Its marvelous how he can capture an ordinary scene and make it extraordinary. We can easily find old shophouses like these in Kuching but not many people know how to truly appreciate their beauties and values.

As part of the activities for The Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and the country’s 50 years of nationhood celebration, the Sarawak Tourism Federation, through its component member, the Sarawak Handicraft and Souvenir Association, together with the Sarawak Craft Council is organizing the Sarawak Cultural Arts and Craft Festival from 20 Oct to 4 Nov 2007. This will be held at Sarawak Tourism Complex, Kuching. The Art Camp will run from 26 to 28 Oct 2007. The event is open to the whole Malaysia and artists from other countries such as Singapore, Myammar, Vietnam, Poland etc. to take part. There are 2 art exhibitions, one starts from 20 Oct while the other which showcase the artworks done during the art camp, will start from 31 Oct. Anyone interested to take part can register on their official website. There are also 2 competitions that are open for registration, Sarawak State-Wide Art Competition and Sarawak Young Fashion Designer Award. Forms can be downloaded from their website. Such International Art show is rare in Kuching so all are welcome to have a look.

DIY Ipod Nano 3G casing

I made a casing for my Ipod Nano from felt cloth. Its easy to stitch together and its nice and soft to hold. I'm so pleased with it, I think I may make a few more in different colors & textile. This helps to save cost since the actual casing is expensive. My sister Leona make her casing from an old diary. I think its pretty cool too. Initially, I made a mock up of the casing(below) but I simplified it.

Ipod Nano

This is the new Ipod Nano. This is better than the older version by leaps and bounds. Im getting the 4GB Ipod (RM619) soon. It only comes in grey(too bad), whereas the 8GB comes in 5 colors. The 4GB has a capacity of up to 1,000 songs, 3,500 photos and 4 hours of video. The screen is 2-inch (diagonal). Small but doesn't matter if I'm watching from upclose.

Sarawak Nepenthes Summit

The 2007 Sarawak Nepenthes Summit was held in Kuching from 18-21 August 2007. I took part in the Art exhibition which runs from 17-19 August 2007. The exotic pitcher plants were brought in from overseas and very nicely displayed in the booths.

I joined the live painting session at the State library on 10 August 2007 with 7 other fellow artists. The art materials are provided. We were required to do 2 paintings each. There were a big crowd because of other events happening at the same time. It started at 9am and ended by 6pm. It had been a good experience. I get to chat with some curious onlookers.

I manage to only do 1 painting on the spot. The other one, I had to finish it at home.
I painted with pelaka on canvas. The titles are "Sanctuary for knowledge" and "Cultivating a good habit".

Champions Youth Cup in Kuching

We went for the sunday (12 Aug) football match at the Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya. It is the last day of the Champions Youth Cup in Kuching, Bayern Munich vs Chelsea. The ticket was only RM8 per person since there's only 1 match. The pitch was in such a bad condition that they have to fill the holes with sand during halftime. You will be distracted by the sandy patches when you watch it on TV. Bayern won at 1-1. This lucky guy is the winner of the lucky draw to see Chelsea play in a Premier League match in London. He tried his best to get to the field even if it required him to climb the fence.A fight started.

Penang World Music Festival

Instead of going to the Rainforest World Music Festival this year, we went to the first Penang World Music Festival. Just for a taste of something different. We went for the Saturday and Sunday show. Tickets selling at RM40 per night. We took a free bus from Komtar which drop us at a carpark near to the Botanical Garden. From there we take a free shuttle bus to the Quarry Garden. It rained on both nights. We had to hide in the shelter which was far from the stage. Its amazing to see quite a big crowd still enjoying themselves and dancing in the rain. I think they should call it the Penang Rain+forest World Music Festival.

They really should sell anything related to Angkor because the desire to purchase such a book is the strongest when you're right there marveling at the ruins. We had a 4 days trip to Siem Reap and a 3 day pass to Angkor Park. It was an exhausting trip but the beauty of Angkor made it all worthwhile. The place was hot & dusty with such pitiful living condition. So many street kids wander around trying to sell something to the tourists. We spend most nights at "Pub Street", where cool cafes & restaurants open till late.

We've been away for a while (with a good reason). My sister Leona had a series of weddings in Kuching, Sarikei & Kajang. We took the opportunity to visit Siem Reap, Cambodia since we're going to KL. I'm still busy editing the photos we took during our holiday & the weddings. Here are some taken during the wedding dinner in Kuching. Her photographer, Robin Ng also has the photos of her Kajang wedding ready on his blog. I'm sad to announce that the wedding cats stones I painted for her was stolen on her wedding day.

I think in this world, women are constantly the victim. They have to endure so much suffering and pain. This painting shows a woman who's been raped and abused. This is painted around 1997. I used acrylic to paint on cardboard which I later cut with a cutter to create a "scarred" look. I pressed on the surface to make it appear uneven.
